Concept and Mechanics
Eye-Catch is a fast-paced character recognition game where players must quickly identify a target face among similar-looking characters. Inspired by the "Wanted!" minigame in Super Mario 64 DS, it challenges players’ visual perception, pattern recognition, and reaction speed.
At the start of each round, a target character is shown briefly. The player then has to find and click that exact face from a group of options as fast as possible. The game rewards accuracy and speed, increasing difficulty with more visually similar faces and shorter time limits as the game progresses.
Hardware
Mouse Input: To (re)start the game the Player has to click on the corresponding buttons with the mouse.
Eye Tracking: Eye-Catch supports eye-tracking hardware to allow gaze-based interaction. The game registers a selection when the player focuses on the correct character, offering a hands-free and immersive experience.
Level Design
The levels are made up of more complicated face grids:
Easy Levels: Limited characters with recognisable characteristics (e.g., facial shape, hair colour).
Medium Levels: Minor changes in accessories, eyewear, or facial expressions.
Hard Levels: Characters who are almost the same with only minor variations in traits, such as eye colour or haircut highlights.
Every level has a time limit, and players that make precise and timely decisions score higher.
User Interface
The user interface has an attractive, simple-to-use cartoon style with pastel colours. Important UI components consist of:
Above HUD: Shows the countdown timer, the target face to find, and the current score.
Game Over Screen: Indicates when a session is over and provides options to replay or end it.
Avatars for characters: The use of distinctive chibi-style avatars as visual targets makes the game endearing and accessible to players of all ages.
The UI design's clarity and visual friendliness make it suitable for both young players and casual gamers.
