Vision Statement
Black Hole Betty is a ridiculous arcade adventure about questionable parenting, reckless science, and the chaos that follows when your daughter steals a black hole generator.
With vibrant visuals, addictive gameplay mechanics, and a playful yet heartfelt narrative, Black Hole Betty invites players of all ages to get lost in the fun of organized chaos. Through each level, we challenge players to think fast, adapt to the unpredictable, and discover that sometimes the greatest adventures start with a little curiosity.
Game Mechanics
The starting screen is the interface of a machine, with numerous knobs and switches that will influence the experience of the gameplay. The player needs to figure out which knobs are helpful and which make things worse. After each run, the player can adjust the machine. Once the player hits the start button, the run starts in Level 1.

During the run, the player has to chase after Betty, dodge obstacles and collect perk items, as Betty runs rampage through the science lab. There will be ways to influence gravity, so also walls and ceilings become relevant while running through the different rooms of the science lab.
The controls will be simple and limited to WASD (or arrow keys) SPACE for jump and an action button to use items.
The goal is to reach Betty before everything gets sucked into the black hole but be aware: Betty might has some tricks up her sleeve.
Level Design
Room 1 – Laboratory:
- Theme: A high-tech lab filled with scientific equipment (test tubes, Bunsen burners, bubbling liquids).
- Challenges: Avoid falling objects like a flickering ceiling panel hanging by a thread. Navigate through broken glass and chemical spills that slow movement. Collect power-ups for temporary speed boosts or shields.
- Mechanics: Introduction to gravity distortion, with slight pull towards the black hole.
Room 2 – Corridor:
- Theme: A dimly lit, industrial corridor with signs of corrosion from chemical leaks.
- Challenges: Jump over corroded floor sections and avoid falling debris. Timed doors that close quickly, requiring precise timing. Black hole gravity increases, affecting movement and jumping.
- Mechanics: Increased difficulty with faster pace and disorienting visual effects (light bending, slight camera shake).
Room 3 – Command Center:
- Theme: A high-tech control room with screens flickering and alarms blaring.
- Challenges: Objects float due to intense gravity distortion. Black holes multiply, creating multiple gravitational pulls. Final chase sequence with limited visibility and loud sound effects.
- Mechanics: Final sprint to grab the Black Hole Generator. Gravity and speed reach their peak, with an increasing risk of being pulled in.
Story
Betty, the evil, but clever daughter of Fred steals the Blackhole-Generator of her parent’s laboratory and makes herself on the road to madness. You enter different rooms as the dad in order to catch your daughter before she sucks up the whole world in one black hole. The closer you get to her you will feel more drawn to the black hole. The sight gets more and more dizzy and you’ll hear a whirring sound in a crazy frequence, that confuses your senses increasingly.
To get to Betty you’ll have to chase Betty through the following rooms until you get the Black hole generator she is holding in her hand. Be aware that the gravity of the black hole gets stronger and the pace of the game increases due to that.
- Room 1 – Laboratory: It starts off slowly and you walk through the lab, where you can see a lot of chemical equipment such as test tubes, Bunsen burner and bubbling liquids. The flickering light panel in the middle of the room is about to crash down as it is hanging by just a thread, so the player has to be aware of that.
- Room 2 – Corridor: Here in the corridor, you need to watch your step, because the floor has been corroded in some places due to the acid from the laboratory.
- Room 3 – Command center: You are getting closer to Betty, but also closer to the black hole, which is about to drag you both in. You rush in to save her and grab the Black Hole Generator. Quickly, you want to switch to 'Absorb' mode, causing the black hole—or the multiple black holes that have formed in the meantime—to be sucked back into oblivion. Save her before it is too late to escape.

In the end you realize that your daughter is the same evil genius as you are and you better not leave her alone again with any of your experiments and inventions.
