Progression is driven by accumulating knowledge rather than by levelling skills, upgrades or similar systems. Your primary tool is your wisdom about Sonder and its laws of nature which you gain step by step throughout your playthrough. By solving puzzles and exploring the world you collect crucial pieces of information that help you unlock further areas or puzzles. Winning the game means reaching the Ascendance’s Vault located at the core of Sonder and flipping the switch to save the civilisation of Warmstein.
All aspects of Sonder are designed to support our main design principle and core experience of our game: “Embrace The World”. The world is designed to draw the player into it. Sonder establishes a “truth in systems” with coherent worldbuilding and detailed cavern environments. Become acquainted with an entirely new fantasy realm. The game’s setting, characters and artifacts are all part of a larger narrative that you need to uncover step by step.
Sonder is built around non-linear exploration. You are free to explore any part of the cavern at your own pace. The game encourages curiosity and rewards you for taking risks and investigating the environment a little beyond of what is deemed usual.
The world of Sonder pings back and forth between two points in time. Time moves forward for 10 minutes, and then reverses, walking back those exact 10 minutes. Use this forward and backward time to your advantage and solve puzzles to find your way through the world.
You’re inside an asteroid floating through the universe. The enormous cave system within is civilised by mushroom-like creatures. Each biome features unique aesthetics and mechanics. Sonder’s colourful, otherworldly environment and biomes are color coded by luminescent flora and fauna. Rising water levels and floods, make traversal through the caverns difficult.
The Sonderlings species features funghi and amphibian body parts, allowing for great abstraction and character in the design process!

Hi, I’m Mathias!!! I’m deeply passionate about games as an art form, both visually and narratively. As a technical artist and graphics programmer, I specialize in creating shaders, VFX, and procedural systems to hopefully breathe life into the worlds I work on.
